Whistler by Ann Patchett
At the Met, a woman realizes the man following her is her former stepfather, cut out of her life after a car accident when she was nine. It's Ann Patchett, so obviously yes.
The take: I'm a big Ann Patchett fan. This isn't my favorite of hers (that would be The Dutch House), but the story is unique and compelling. It's a slow burn, so be in it for the writing and humanity, not the plot.
